Filed in: The Home Front, The Way We Live Now

My kids—who behave as if they are political veterans after we dragged them up to N.H. three years ago to hold signs for Kerry—have both commented separately in the last week on how quiet I’m being about the election this time around.

It’s true, I’m pretty sanquine. Or maybe it’s just cynicism: My state doesn’t vote for another five weeks or whatever, so whoever I like could easily be away and gone by then. Every presidential election, the primary schedule makes less and less sense to me, and this year is no exception.

Having said all that, I did just realize today that:

1) Barak Obama is the exact same age as I am, right down to the month and everything. This actually kind of creeps me out. If we’re the same age, then why do I feel like his Mom when I watch footage of him out on the campaign trail? I’m afraid he’s going to get hurt. I want to tell him to be home by dark and to wear a helmet, damnit.

Also, unrelated: for two people who are the same age, one of us is looking way better than the other is, I’m just sayin’.

2) He was born in Hawaii, one of my states! How cool is that?

[Update: Duh! I knew there was more to this: Barack was born in Hawaii and his mother was born in Kansas. That’s what’s cool, the two-state coincidence.]

So am I voting for him? Uh, nope, not in the primary anyways! Wondering who my mystery candidate is? You’ll just have to wait and see . . .

[Further update: Post-NH, my mystery candidate isn’t looking so hot. That ought to be a big hint for you all.]
